AMAZING WRITE UP. THANK YOU
I got home, knowing new Ja was coming out on Hot 97. Funk Flex made me listen to the first 20 seconds on repeat for about 15 minutes. Those few strings are burned into folds in my brain. For a moment, let’s forget what 50 Cent did to Ja Rule’s career. Let’s forget how Ja didn’t make it better for himself with Cadillac Tah and Irv Gotti as backup. Let’s forget that he talked about Eminem’s Hailie. ”Clap Back” was a beautiful track, 100% a hood classic. Every DJ wanted to scream over that track. And when you listen to SXMPLELIFE’s remix, you’ll remember the importance it held. I included the original below.
Way to soften this track up, SXMPLE, though. The street classic gets put in the microwave with marshmallow puffed strings and shines. SXMPLE keeps enough drums and bass to retain the memory of the hood, but manages to coat it with a believable spray of indy vibes. He revisits the atmosphere to forge an elevating track, steadily reminding us of love(s) lost and chances missed. Really describes Ja’s career in a powerful way. Any time an artist can flip the aura of a track without violating its impact is impressive.
By refocusing Ja’s intensity in a new space, SXMPLE gives us a reference-heavy sound without a sample form the original. We are transported by the track’s energy, perfectly tuned by the Boston native.

A very cool new video from artist, Deniro Farrar. The track is produced by on DecK alum, SXMPLELIFE. This is straight heat so make sure you check it out.
Deniro Farrar releases “FEARS”, produced by SXMPLELIFE. SXMPLELIFE lays out a chilling beat guided by aerated whines, piercing cymbals, and tightened strings. Imposing a series of sharply cut instruments over a vaporous whine/hum transforms these instruments into curt replicas. They’re distinct from the dormant background sounds both in pitch and depth; it’s as if these tightened instruments don’t want to be held. As quickly as they enter the scene, they leave.
Deniro, of course, depicts this chilling sentiment with equally caustic lyrics. He stakes the claim that of all the rappers in the room, he’s “…the fuckin coldest.” That’s the honest Deniro that we’ve grown to love and listen to. He isn’t cold because he claims a series of jux he’s caught. He’s cold because the world froze him over. He shouts out KOBK (Kill Or Be Killed, his tape with Shady Blaze), which was a tape (two tapes, sort of) that focused on the icy pasts of the two main contributing emcees. Deniro focuses on love lost, opportunities past, and unfulfilled wants on “FEARS”. His penchant for raw autobiography continues to forge his persona as the most fearless rapper. No other rapper is out here talking about what they wished for; they only want to tell you about the (imaginary) things they’ve acquired.
***Nothing imaginary here***

Pepperboy drops Daytime, his follow-up to his recently released Nitetime (with both covers included above). He cued me in on this early yesterday, so I’ve had time to digest his spirit-lifting tape, which features production from Regula B, DAMBA, Fantasy Camp, Marvin Cruz, Music Majors, Sxmplelife, Toy Trains, Kira, and Ryan Evans. He enlists Keyboard Kid, Yung Yadi, and Squadda B as the only vocal features on this cloudy glimpse into the mind of Pepp. His 11-track album is just long enough to compose an idea without becoming repetitive or falling short of its intended goal.
Pepp has been toying with foggy sounds for some time now, and he’s really coming into his own as a cloud-representative. He maneuvers beats that drip from great heights, rotate his words around listeners, and float his hopes and dreams to the sky. He uses pneumatic sounds to inflate listeners’ responses to his words: as Pepp’s message steadily elevates, so do the sounds supporting him. Beats swell alongside an artist whose message focuses on our ability to auto-analyze and improve.
Every track forces listeners to follow the Arkansas wise-man on his journey to raise listeners’ mindsets. ”Rebel Muzick” (not just the name of his upcoming tape with Squadda B, it’s also his life philosophy) is meant to uplift the populations that are endangered by the hard streets and systems of the USA.
Although Pepp focuses a significant portion of his material on war (and fighting, in general), he uses this recurring theme to tell the story of any person who fights every day to survive. He doesn’t glorify the eye-for-an-eye mentality that he was once a part of. His revolution is peaceful in its methods and demands. Pepp asks that we change our mindsets as world citizens, that we begin to view all of our neighbors as participants in our idea of “good”. Our neighbors can be as close as next door, or as far away as Pakistan; Pepp wants you to understand them, and spread love their way. He wants to create a cohesive world made up of individuals who accept all those foreign and domestic.
Solve pain with love, not more of the same. And he doesn’t beg you. Pepp shows you. His life is a testament to the ugliest sides of hate, and the most empowering sides of love. Pepp’s acoustic rendition of his passage from hugging the block to hugging his fellow humans is inspiring. And it’s meant to be.
☁☁☁Stay positive and embrace the sounds of Pepperboy☁☁☁
